Red Lobster Biscuits are savory, cheesy, buttery biscuits that are known for their buttery, garlic, and cheesy flavor. They’re super easy to make in your own kitchen.
With step-by-step instructions and expert tips, you’re in for a treat!
Step-by-step photos and instructions are below!
I didn’t grow up eating biscuits, but I sure wish I had!
I had heard great things about the famous Cheddar Bay Biscuits at Red Lobster. (International readers: Red Lobster is a seafood chain restaurant here in the US). Given that I am not a seafood person AT ALL, I had no way to sample this phenomenon without making them myself.
So, I took a basic biscuit recipe and added cheese and butter and seasonings.
This recipe uses a box mix shortcut, but check out my homemade biscuit mix recipe – you use the full recipe for this. The best part is you can even use a food processor to make the baking mix if you want to do this the super easy way!!
My kids REALLY love cheesy biscuits. They use them to dip in a bowl of chicken and vegetables (I used my chicken pot pie filling) and happily snarf them and demand more any time I make these. I do love a family-friendly recipe that appeals to the adults in the house too.
I hope you love this recipe in the comfort of your own home! Let me know in the comments!

- This is an easy recipe to adapt and make your own! Add different ingredients like herbs, spices, or different cheeses to put your own twist on the recipe.
- Easily found ingredients. Simple ingredients, all found at your house or at your local grocery store.
Frequently Asked Questions
A gorgeous garlic butter glaze is brushed onto the fluffy biscuits after baking. You can add extra garlic powder to the dough if you really want to ramp it up.
Yes, if using self-rising flour, omit the baking powder and salt from the recipe as self-rising flour already contains these.
Absolutely! Some people enjoy adding chopped fresh herbs like chives or rosemary to the dough for an added flavor profile.
You can refrigerate leftover biscuit dough wrapped in plastic wrap for up to two days. However, be aware that the baking powder might lose some leavening power over time.
What to serve with biscuits
Warm flavorful biscuits to go along with a hearty dinner is something pretty close to heaven! I serve these over chicken pot pie, with soups and stews and honestly…. by themselves stuffed with some bacon and eggs. I’m not even ashamed.

Kylee’s Notes
To make ahead
You can prepare the dough ahead of time and refrigerate it. When ready to bake, let it come to room temperature for a bit, shape your biscuits, and then bake. Alternatively, you can bake the biscuits and then freeze them to be reheated later. See below for freezing instructions.
What to do with leftovers
They’re best enjoyed fresh, but they can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to two days. For longer storage, consider refrigerating or freezing.
Freezing instructions
- Let Them Cool: Before freezing, make sure the biscuits have cooled completely to room temperature. This helps prevent condensation inside the storage bag or container, which can lead to freezer burn.
- Pre-freeze (Optional but Recommended):
- Place the biscuits on a baking sheet, making sure they aren’t touching.
- Put the baking sheet in the freezer for about 1-2 hours or until the biscuits are firm. This step ensures that the biscuits won’t stick together when you put them in the same bag or container.
- Wrap Individually (Optional):
- For extra protection, you can wrap each biscuit individually in plastic wrap or aluminum foil. This helps prevent freezer burn and keeps the biscuits fresh.
- Use Freezer Bags or Airtight Containers:
- Transfer the biscuits (either individually wrapped or not) into heavy-duty freezer bags. Remove as much air as possible before sealing. Using a straw to suck out the air can be a makeshift way to create a vacuum-sealed effect.
- Alternatively, you can use airtight containers that are freezer-safe.
- Label and Date:
- Use a permanent marker to write the date and contents on the freezer bag or container. This way, you’ll know when you froze them and can use them up while they’re still good.
- Store in Freezer: Place the biscuits in the coldest part of your freezer, typically the back.
- Reheating:
- When you’re ready to eat them, remove the desired number of biscuits from the freezer.
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Place the biscuits on a baking sheet and heat for about 20-25 minutes in the oven or toaster oven, or until they’re thoroughly warmed.
- If they were glazed with garlic butter before freezing, consider brushing them with a fresh garlic butter mixture for added flavor and moisture after reheating.
Remember, for best quality, try to use the frozen biscuits within 1-2 months, although they can technically last longer in the freezer.
Recipe Ingredients and Possible Substitutes
The full list of ingredients and quantities is found in the printable recipe card below.
- Baking Mix. This can be any brand, of course. I use Bisquick Mix, or make my own. It’s a mix of all purpose flour, sugar, salt, baking powder, baking soda and butter. Make your own!
- Cheddar Cheese. This is a great example of when to grate your own cheese. Store-bought grated cheese has an additive to stop it sticking together, which affects its melty-ness (made that word up). Grate yours fresh!!
While sharp cheddar cheese is traditional, you can experiment with other cheeses like Monterey Jack, Colby, or even mozzarella. The flavor will change slightly depending on your choice. - Butter. I use salted butter, always! If you use unsalted butter, add a little extra salt to the mixture.
- Seasonings: salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, and dried parsley. You can use anything you like in this, try my Italian Seasoning for a fun twist.
