Frequently Asked Questions
Yes, you do. It is an important step to take even before you begin. Brownie mix contains raw flour, so it’s important to kill any possible salmonella or bacteria. See below for instructions on how to do this in under 5 minutes.
The culprit is usually not mixing your cream cheese well enough which can happen if it’s not soft enough to begin with. You may also notice lumps in the brownie mix, which can be eliminated by sifting it or whisking the mix very well.
Sure you can. Keep it covered and stored in the fridge until you’re ready to serve it. Then, bring it to room temperature and stir it.
Unfortunately, no! This isn’t a proper brownie recipe as it doesn’t include eggs or oil. If you want brownies, you’ll need a whole new package of the mix and follow the directions on the box.
Nope! I don’t recommend freezing. Just store leftovers in the fridge, covered with plastic wrap. or in a container.
Heat Treating Brownie Mix: A Safety Must
Raw flour in brownie mix can harbor foodborne pathogens like E. coli and salmonella. Safeguard yourself by heat treating the brownie mix to eliminate any potential threats!
Simply microwave the brownie mix in a bowl for 90 seconds, whisking every 15 seconds. Or, spread it on a baking sheet and bake at 350°F for 5 minutes. A small step for a safer, scrumptious treat!

Kylee’s Notes
What to do with leftovers
Keep any leftovers covered in an airtight container for 4 days. Just be sure you’re not saving anything that’s been double-dipped into. Because, ew.
Substitutions/Additions
In a pinch, you can use whipped cream instead of Cool Whip (or whipped topping). It just won’t stabilize as well and may cause your whipped dip to deflate, but it will still taste great.
Add some fun mix-ins! Swap the mini chocolate chips with peanut butter chips, mini marshmallows, Oreo cookie chunks, M&Ms, or mini Reese’s cups.
Can you freeze brownie dip?
Nope! Just store leftovers in the fridge.
Recipe Ingredients and Possible Substitutes
The full list of ingredients and quantities is found in the printable recipe card below.
- Box of brownie mix. Whatever brownie mix you have will work. You’re using just the dry powder (made of flour, sugar, cocoa powder, salt and baking powder) and you’re not using any additional ingredients listed on the box, nor are you making brownie batter with it. You can use homemade brownie mix, but you’ll still heat treat it so it is safe to eat raw.
- Cream cheese. Bring the cream cheese to room temperature at least 30 minutes before. You want it warm enough to whip easily and to blend without leaving lumps behind. You can use reduced fat, or full-fat cream cheese
- Whipped topping, such as Cool Whip Thaw it overnight as it does come frozen. You can also thaw it on the counter for about 1 hour. This gives the dip a lighter whipped consistency but also helps to stabilize it. You can use homemade whipped cream, but it will not be as fluffy.
- Chocolate chips. Semi-sweet, milk chocolate, dark chocolate, etc. I like both the regular and mini chocolate chips. You can also use the mini reese’s pieces if you want a peanut butter alternative.
